Jim Bushey, P.E.

Owner/Principal Engineer - El Gran Jefe

James R. Bushey, PE, has been the owner and Principal Engineer of PPI Engineering since 1994 when he purchased the Napa office of Provost & Pritchard, Inc.  Jim managed both the technical and administrative functions of the Napa office beginning in February of 1990.

With over 35 years of engineering experience, Jim’s responsibilities have included managing all phases of storm drainage, water supply, erosion control and subsurface drainage projects, from planning and surveying through design, permitting and construction.  He has completed projects in a variety of environments but vineyard engineering has been his primary focus for the past 30+ years.

Since 1990 Jim has completed the design and construction staking and review of over 200 drainage systems and 150 erosion control systems on more than 250 different vineyard properties.  He has designed systems on all types of geographic terrain in a variety of climatic regions.  In addition, Jim has completed the design and construction staking and review of over 15 reservoirs.  He has designed numerous landslide repairs ranging from small slips a few hundred square feet in size to a massive failure covering 20 acres.  Jim has extensive experience in many types of survey work, including topographic surveys, control surveys and construction surveys.  He also has experience in hydrologic analysis and stream mechanics utilizing both precise field techniques and state-of-the-art computer programs.  As the regulatory requirements on vineyards have evolved and broadened over the past several decades, Jim has become intimately involved in the permitting process at the local, state and federal levels for a variety of projects.

Based on his experience and success in the design of Erosion Control Plans in Napa County, Jim was selected as a pre-qualified consultant authorized to prepare Erosion Control Plans for vineyard replant projects with no technical review by the County of Napa under the Track II process.  Jim is the only Engineer to be on Napa County’s pre-approved list of Track II Plan Preparers continuously since its inception in 1994 and has prepared over 125 ECPs covering over 4,000 acres under the Track II process.  He has supervised the preparation of ECPs on over 10,000 total acres in Napa County and an additional 10,000-plus acres throughout California.

Jim began his career with the Soil Conservation Service (now the Natural Resources Conservation Service), where he acquired a solid foundation with incorporating conservation measures in engineering practices.  Jim is a Registered Civil Engineer in California (RCE 49931) and a Registered Agricultural Engineer in California (#488).

Jim’s personal involvement with each project on which PPI provides engineering has resulted in PPI’s ability to offer outstanding service to all its clients.
